Unknown man with firearms killed a New York imam and his assistant near their Mosque in Queens, New York, reported several US media this Friday.

From the New York Police Department said the Imam Maulama Akondzhi (55) and his assistant 64-year-old Tara Judah was killed in broad daylight, around 14am by local time in the area of Queens, which is called Ozone Park.

In that neighborhood, on the border between Queens and Brooklyn are live many Muslim families from Bangladesh.

Their attacker approached the two men from behind and opened fire on them, hitting them in the head. Imam died on the spot from the bullet that had been fired into his head, while his assistant died in hospital.

The police announce that the killer runs away with the gun in hand at crime scene.

The police said that the motive for the killing is unknown so far, and that so far no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

– Nothing in the preliminary investigation indicated that they maybe were killed because of their religion, said a police spokesman.

The office of New York mayor emphasized that police are investigating all possibilities, even that the possibility it was a crime caused by a religion hate.

The crime scene outside a Mosque lately gathered more than a hundred people, and many of them loudly shouted “We want justice”.

Council on American-Islamic Relations, held a press conference near the scene of the crime, where the Imam of another mosque Kobir Choudri said: “It is hate crime directed against Islam”.
